The still common view of faculty development as improving poor teachers is out of date. With faculty salaries and support now comprising well over 2/3 of most academic expenses, a new, comprehensive model for talent management is needed. Assisting faculty in reaching their full potential, aligned with theorganization's goals is necessary to attain the gains in faculty productivity required today.
Comprehensive professional development is also increasingly necessary in recruitment and retention of the most highly skilled faculty in areas in high demand. As industry has found, employees migrate to organizations that offer them the greatest professional development opportunities in both work assignments and career development.
Comprehensive faculty professional development programs thus address:
- All phases of faculty career–recruitment, orientation, junior faculty, senior faculty, retirement planning, post retirement opportunities
- Individual personal and professional, group, and organizational development needs
- Technical knowledge and skill building (e.g. teaching, research, clinical), interpersonal skill building (e.g. managing difficult conversations, conflict management, group dynamics), attitude and behavioral skill building (i.e. cultural competency, sexual harassment), community building skills (i.e. leadership development, teambuilding)
- Career planning and development (e.g. preparation for promotion and tenure, career transitions)
- Policies and procedures that foster an organizational culture that values professional development
